Report of FIMSA Advanced Immunology Course 2022

Hong Kong Society for Immunology (HKSI) and The Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA) jointly held the FIMSA Advanced Immunology Course (Virtual) in August 19-20, 2022. Prof. Kathy Lui from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Prof. Liwei Lu from the University of Hong Kong served as the Directors of the course.

Prof. Kathy Lui, the president of HKSI, gave an opening remark, in which she welcomed all the speakers and registrants and thanked the support from HKSI and FIMSA. After the welcome speech, 27 renowned scientists from 22 institutions of 8 countries/regions delivered inspiring lectures on various research fields. On Aug. 19, Prof. Sunil Arora from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, India, delivered a lecture entitled “Antigen presenting cells: processing and presentation of antigen”. Prof. Yuzhang Wu from The Army Medical University, China, delivered a lecture entitled “T cell exhaustion and immune dynamics thereof”. Prof. Laura Mackay from The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Australia, delivered a lecture entitled “Programming of tissue-resident memory T cells”. Prof. Sidong Xiong from Soochow University, China, delivered a lecture entitled “A leaf of window opens for immunology when self-DNA become autoantigen”. Prof. Esteban Ballestar from Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute, Spain, delivered a lecture entitled “Epigenetic dysregulation in immune-mediated disease”. Prof. Young-Min Hyun from Yonsei University, Korea, delivered a lecture entitled “Neutrophil-gated immune response during sepsis: lesson from intravital imaging”. Prof. Luis Graca from University of Lisbon, Portugal, delivered a lecture entitled “Regulation of antibody production by T follicular helper subsets”. Prof. Kazuyo Moro from Osaka University, Japan delivered a lecture entitled “The role of group 2 innate lymphoid cells in pulmonary diseases”. Prof. Kathy Lui from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, delivered a lecture entitled “The why and how of CD4+ T cells in cardiovascular disease and repair”. Prof. Zhiwei Chen from the University of Hong Kong delivered a lecture entitled “COVID-19 vaccination and preventive efficacy”. 

Prof. Jun Yu from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Kwan Ting Chow from City University of Hong Kong chaired the morning session on Aug. 20. Prof. Tak Wah Mak from University of Toronto, Canada / the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, delivered a lecture entitled “Does the immune system think?”. Prof. Xuetao Cao from Nankai University, China delivered a lecture entitled “Nuclear DNA sensor hnRNP-A2B1 in innate immunity, inflammation and cancer”. Prof. Hai Qi from Tsinghua University, China delivered a lecture entitled “Germinal center T-B interactions”. Prof. Chen Dong from Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, China delivered a lecture entitled “T cell subsets in immunity and diseases”. Prof. Chak Sing Lau from the University of Hong Kong delivered a lecture entitled “Understanding systemic lupus erythematosus: from bench to bedside and back”. Prof. Lingyun Sun from Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, China delivered a lecture entitled “Mesenchymal stem cell transplantation for treating autoimmune diseases”. Prof. Jun Yu from the Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered a lecture entitled “Gut microbiome in modulating anti-cancer immunotherapy response”. Prof. Chun Kwok Wong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Prof Nancy Kwan Man from the University of Hong Kong chaired the afternoon session. Prof. Jie Zhou from Tianjin Medical University, China delivered a lecture entitled “Myeloid-derived suppressor cells in early life”. Prof. Youhai Chen from CAS Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, China delivered a lecture entitled “New immune checkpoints and cancer immunotherapy”. Prof. Bo Huang from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, China, delivered a lecture entitled “How CD8+ memory T cells maintain their longevity?”. Prof. Shie-Liang Hsieh from Academia Sinica, Taipei, delivered a lecture entitled “The critical roles of Syk-CLRs in COVID-19 induced Immunothrombosis”. Prof. Jana Vukovic from the University of Queensland, Australia delivered a lecture entitled “Investigation into the role of microglia in brain injury”. Prof. Qianjing Lu from Central South University, China delivered a lecture entitled “AIM2 in TFH cell differentiation and its molecular mechanism in SLE development”. Prof. Shohei Hori from The University of Tokyo, Japan, delivered a lecture entitled “Molecular control of regulatory T cell differentiation and function by Foxp3 and TCR”. Prof. Xiaoyu Hu from Tsinghua University, China, delivered a lecture entitled “Regulation of macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses”. Prof. Nancy Kwan Man from the University of Hong Kong delivered a lecture entitled “Transplant immunology and oncology - the immune regulation on tumor microenvironment”. Prof. Chun Kwok Wong from the Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered a lecture entitled “The anti-inflammatory mechanism of Interleukin-37 in atopic dermatitis: proteomic, molecular and animal approaches”. At last, Prof. Liwei Lu, the Secretariat of HKSI, gave a concluding remark to thank all the participants again and announce the successful completion of the Course. 

In this course, there are 419 participants registered including participants, speakers and chairpersons. The registrants are from 16 countries and districts, including Hong Kong (125), Korea (110), mainland China (121), Iran (18), India (18), Japan (12), Sri Lanka (1) USA (3), Australia (3), Spain (1), Portugal (1), Taipei (1), Canada (1), Singapore (1), United Kingdom (1), and German (1).
