Highlights from the FIMSA 2021 meeting

Despite the difficult situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a spectacular success for the 8th Federation of Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania (FIMSA) 2021 meeting organized by the Korean Association of Immunologists (KAI). This meeting attracted 1,082 attendees (169 foreigners) from 29 countries both virtual and on-site. This number consisted of 618 delegates, 79 invited speakers from 16 countries, 73 exhibitors. 

From October 31 to November 1, 2021, BEXCO in Busan, South Korea was packed with members of the immunology community engaged in intensive and in-depth scientific discussions, brainstorming, and social networking, with the slogan of "Immunology for Humanity."




At this conference, a total of 79 speakers, including 45 foreigners, gave excellent lectures. Three outstanding immunologists, Prof. Tomohiro Kurosaki, Prof. Chen Dong, and Prof. Carola G. Vinuesa were invited to give Plenary Sessions. The main topics were cutting-edge of immunology: Function of memory B cells and their generation mechanism; IL-17 family cytokines in mucosal immunity and diseases; How follicular regulatory T cells control rogue B cell responses.


FIMSA 2021 has 2 Special sessions (Immunology of COVID-19 and Spatial Multi-omics in Immunology), 16 Block Symposium (Cancer Immunology; Allergy; Infection and Immunity; Autoimmune Diseases; Regulation of T Cell Immunity; Microbiome and Immunity; NK cells and Innate T Cells; Neuroimmunology; Immunometabolism; Dendritic Cells and Innate Immunity; Regulation of B Cell Immunity; Mucosal Immunology; Cancer Immunotherapy; Immunogenomics;  Vaccine Development; Tissue-Resident Immune Cells), 24 Oral Presentations, and 2 Industrial Symposium. 222 posters and oral presentations from 19 countries were presented with the latest discoveries in the field of immunology. Total 20 FIMSA 2021 Award of Poster Presentation was selected by the scientific committee.




Additionally, 73 related companies participated as sponsors, and special lectures on new products and technologies, company introductions, and various promotions were exhibited. 


FIMSA 2021 meeting has contributed to expanding international academic communications in the field of immunology and promoting Immunological Societies of Asia-Oceania and academic status to the world.
